I'm Newman Johnston
My interest in photography began in high school when I purchased a 35mm film camera and built a small darkroom. High school sporting events, yearbook photos, and everyday moments became my early subjects. Photography remained a favorite hobby until work and life gradually took priority.
A few decades later, my wife rediscovered some of those early photographs and encouraged me to return to the craft with a Nikon digital camera. That gift opened the door to a new chapter and a renewed learning curve. I began with product photography for our business website and landscapes during our travels. Although I had always enjoyed birds, living on a barrier island in North Florida deepened my interest in photographing them. In 2018, a birding trip to Ecuador—from the Amazon Basin to the Andes, through the cloud forests, and on to the Galápagos Islands—cemented that interest and set the direction for my photography.
Much of my photography is made in the mountains of western North Carolina and along East Coast salt marshes, where seasonal migrations along the Atlantic Flyway bring a wide variety of bird species through the region. Travel to other parts of the world—including South America, Iceland, and tropical ecosystems—continues to expand the range of species and landscapes I am able to observe and document.
Over the years, countless hours spent watching birds in the field have shaped both my photography and my appreciation for the places they inhabit. My work is guided by observation and patience in the field, documenting birds, wildlife, and landscapes as they are encountered in their natural environments.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
