The Velvet-purple Coronet (Boissonneaua jardini) is a striking and enchanting hummingbird species found in the Andes of South America. These birds are adorned with captivating iridescent plumage that shimmers in shades of deep purple and green, making them a visual marvel. The males typically exhibit more vibrant colors and have a velvety purple crown, which is their namesake.
This species primarily inhabits the cloud forests and montane regions of Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru. Their altitudinal range spans from 1,500 to 3,500 meters above sea level, favoring the lush, moss-covered trees and epiphytes found in these highland habitats.
Velvet-purple Coronets are known for their agile and acrobatic flight, darting among the flowers in search of nectar. They feed on a variety of flowering plants and also consume insects for protein. Their presence is crucial for pollinating numerous orchid and bromeliad species, contributing to the health and diversity of their ecosystems.
Despite their dazzling appearance, Velvet-purple Coronets face threats from habitat loss due to deforestation and climate change. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these magnificent hummingbirds and the unique ecosystems they inhabit.
